THE COSTUME OF HINDOSTAN

Publisher : London: Edward Arnold & Co.

The Costume of Hindostan by Belgian artist François Balthazar Solvyns offers a detailed visual record of Bengali society during his residence in Calcutta from 1791 to 1803. First published in 1804 by Edward Orme, is a remarkable example of early 19th-century ethnographic art and bookbinding craftsmanship.

It has sixty coloured engravings with descriptions in English and French, taken in the years 1798 and 1799. AEG. The book is in a contemporary red straight crushed morocco binding with decorative gold tooling on the front, back and spine. Few occasional spotting and watermark.
