William Daniell, along with his uncle Thomas Daniell, created a series of aquatint prints titled "Views in Calcutta" between 1786 and 1788, which were the first topographical prints of the colonial capital. These works, known for their detailed aquatint technique, were very popular in both India and Europe and captured the city's architecture and bustling life, contrasting the European-style buildings with local scenes and inhabitants. Their work depicted both the emerging European architecture, like the Old Government House, and the bustling streets and river life, with both British and Indian subjects.
